Superhero Bathroom Makeover!

Superhero Bathroom Makeover

As many of my readers know, I've been working on Adam's bathroom for a while now because I wanted to make each piece tie in perfectly and make sure I wasn't settling on my vision. However, I also didn't want to make it too "toddler-y" because then I'll just be changing it again in a couple of years. So here's what I did -

To give you a point of reference, here's the bathroom when we bought it:

Plain Jane, right? It's a pretty typical bathroom with what seemed like all the original pieces.

So I began by removing the towel bar and replacing it with hooks. For some reason, I like hooks a lot better than bars, just aesthetically. I found a wood bar with the hooks at Home Depot (which has become one of my favorite places to go). Then, to tie it into the theme, I found "superhero" door knobs at Hobby Lobby. I removed four of the hooks and replaced them. Note: I put the hooks I removed in a closet I put extra pieces and odds and ends because there may be a time (when I'm redecorating most likely) when I want to put them back in.

I bought the shower curtain, rug, and toilet cover from Target. They were very reasonably priced and fit in perfectly. The shower curtain I've actually had for almost two years - before this theme was ever thought of. I just thought it looked cool in our apartment at the time.

Before Adam was born, my sister gave me a wooden Spider-Man comic book cover for when Adam got here. It didn't really go with his room's theme, so it had been sitting on the floor for a long time (too long). It fit perfectly in between the door and the mirror. Right underneath I put a hand towel ring. I went back and forth with this ring. I wanted to put a different element for the towel, but I couldn't find anything I liked that didn't make the wall look too cluttered - so a ring is what I got.

At Hobby Lobby, I found a Batman comic book cover on wood that matched the Spider-Man one AND it was on sale, so I had to buy it. My first thought was that I would put these two wooden pieces on the big wall for the focal point, but after I started hanging them, my mind changed quickly. Batman went above the cabinet instead.

On the shelf over the toilet, I put superhero ducks that Adam got from Christmas from his Aunt Emma. I think it not only incorporates the superhero theme, but also the fact that we're in a bathroom.

Several items I created myself because I couldn't figure out what I wanted exactly and got sucked into Pinterest. Rusty and I visited 2nd and Charles and bought eight $1 comics from heroes and art styles we liked. Then, I began cutting strips and panels I liked (and that didn't have any cursing, nudity, or harsh violence). I cut ALL of the comics because I knew that I would need more strips then I estimated. Note: I made sure I included male AND female heroes because I didn't want Adam growing up thinking females weren't included.

This first - and biggest - project I used the comics for was the focal point in the bathroom. At Goodwill, I found a poster-sized frame and began to mod-podge the strips onto the cardboard back of the frame. I laid down my large pieces first and then went smaller to fill in gaps.

I did the same thing to three smaller (6x4) frames that I also got from Goodwill. I was fortunate to find three matching frames, so you never really know if you'll find exactly what you're looking for. For these, I painted (just leftover acrylic red, yellow, and blue paint) comic book onomatopoeia.

I still had plenty of comic book panels, so I took some bigger ones and covered the outlets. I had this idea from when I was a child (maybe fourth grade) and I did this at Vacation Bible School. So I took the same premise, and added a different level to the theme.

Finally, I found a project for the rest of the comic book pages. At Goodwill, I found a trashcan that had never been used (it was still in plastic wrap) that was a thick cardboard. I painted the inside with some leftover paint from when the walls were painted because it would match the colors and protect the trashcan since the paint is waterproof. On the outside, I again, mod-podged the strips until it was completely covered.

So there you have it - Adam's bathroom! I'm very pleased with it even though Adam has no idea what was going on and doesn't even notice it. However, my goal was to finished before Rusty's sister moved in since she'll be sharing the bathroom with Adam and I met my goal! Other than Adam's room, it is the only room in the house that I can say is completely decorated!

Happy Father's Day 2015!

Thursday, Adam and I went to the library for a K-9 unit demonstration and it was incredible. Adam didn't really get it except that there were dogs, but I actually learned a lot. We saw two different dogs out of the seven dogs in Cobb County. Fun fact: the K-9 units recovered $7.8 million in drugs last year alone! That's insane! The whole morning was definitely worth enduring the heat for!

When we got home, Adam made sure to give his own puppy some love!

Also on Thursday, my new dining room set came in! Yay! This has been a long time coming! I've been reviewing websites, visiting furniture stores, and last week, Rusty and I were out and about and finally had some time to look together. We found one we liked and sealed the deal and I am so happy with our choice. It is a dark wood, which goes great with our red and black kitchen. The table is on columns instead of legs, which gives us some more room to add chairs for events. It also seem more stable because the base is thicker (however, anything would be more stable than our old table).

Last Friday, I finished the 5 Day Challenge of Burning Fat and Building Lean Muscle with Fitness Blender (that's still a mouthful!) and boy am I exhausted. All of my muscles are sore and tired, but I feel great! I'm not planning on weighing until I've completed a month of working out, but I feel better than I did at the beginning!

Because we just got the new table, we HAD to have people over and have a game night! So that's just what we did once Rusty was done with work!

Saturday, I spent the day making a German Chocolate Cake for Father's Day (it was fantastic; get the recipe here) and playing board games! We were celebrating Rusty's Father's Day since Sunday would be devoted to my dad and his dad.

Sunday was Father's Day! We got my dad a gift card and a t-shirt that he posted on Facebook a while back (he loved it) and spent the afternoon with my whole family! In the evening, I made tacos for Rusty's dad and step-mom. It was a great family-filled day!

This morning we went to ToddlerTime at the library and Adam was pretty sure he was leading it! I love that he felt so comfortable because a lot of the time, he's super shy.

You know I've been working on redesigning Adam's bathroom for weeks now and I'm getting super close. I think I'll be done by the weekend because I have two pieces left. Other than Adam's bedroom, this will be the only completely decorated room and I'll reach my goal of having it done before Julie moves in. Update: Check out the finished Superhero Bathroom here!

Ilmee Korean and Hobby Town

I've never met a kid whose hair could be so different. Last week, after Adam's bath, I fixed his hair like Prince George's for fun and put him to bed. When he woke up this morning - full on Super Saiyan! Ha ha! It cracks me up!

Speaking of things that crack me up - I was on Pinterest and came across this picture of a cat and thought "that's my kid"! You be the judge:

We stopped by Rusty's dad's house Saturday afternoon to say hi since they just got back from a cruise as well as visit his sister who just had her wisdom teeth out.

Instead of going straight home, we got Korean for dinner - and Adam ate everything! I was super surprised because I'm not even a fan Kim-chi or bean sprouts. I'm really hoping we can expose him to new foods so he's got a wide palate and willing to try new things. Does anyone else hope for this? Maybe it's just the chef in me. After that we swung by Hobby Town, but just to look around, and then to American Signature Furniture to pick out and buy a new dining room set (which is something we've been meaning to do for a long time now). Will I be able to sit and wait until it arrives....

Yesterday, I was playing around with the slow motion on my phone and got an awesome video of Adam walking. I also caught him trying out his recorder from Mexico that Grammy and Grandpa gave him.

ToddlerTime at the Library today. We've moved up from BabyTime since Adam no longer wants to sit in my lap and let me do the arm motions for him. He loved it, especially since our neighbor and her two youngest were there so he was familiar with someone.

Have any of you used Fitness Blender? I just recently found it online and they seem to have tons of workout videos for free! I decided to try some last week and then one of their challenges this week. I've felt great doing them - even though I'm super sore. Hopefully, I can keep it up because I have a lot of extra weight that I never lost from having a baby... and I want to be a good example for Adam.

After one of these workouts, I look over and Adam has learned to drink out of a straw... my straw...

Giant Leaves and Groomed Dogs

Last Thursday, Adam and I went on a walk and took a deep look at the nature around us. In the process, we collected some GIANT leaves and played with them for the rest of the day.

Also, I want to show you how patient our dog is... I mean really. Adam lays on him, hugs him, chases him. He takes it all in.

Weeks ago I bought Adam a Power Rangers shirt (because I loved them as a kid, but also because it was on sale) and when Rusty got home and saw it, he decided he needed to show it to Adam. We only watched the intro, but Adam loved the music!

I made a cake that was picked up on Friday for a one year old and three year old's joint birthday party. They are the children of someone who I met when I was in 2nd grade and knew my whole childhood because she lived a couple of houses down. We had a chance to reminisce about old times and how crazy it is that we have kids. Also, I got to do my first Jake and the Never Land Pirates cake!

Saturday, we took Kirby to the salon aka Rusty's mom's house to be groomed (look at her recently launched FB page here). He should've gone a month ago, but it just didn't happen. He's a completely different dog, who is probably feeling great now that he doesn't have a winter coat on!

However, with some freshly clipped nails, Kirby jumped on Adam while they were playing Monday and cut Adam's face. Adam didn't seem to mind, but it looks really rough.

We tried a new restaurant that was pretty good this weekend. What I thought was really clever was that the kid's menu was taped onto a book - so not only could you see the menu, but you could pass the wait time by reading to your child!

Yesterday, we went to my parents' church because they are having VBS this week and my mom runs it each year. Adam loved the songs and seeing all the kids.

Today was a quiet, stay-at-home day. It was nice and relaxing.

Happy Birthday Papa and A Cookie!

I know it's only been a couple of days since my last post, but I've always posted on Wednesdays, and I just can't stop.

Sunday, we went by my parents' house for dinner and the dog. They kept Kirby all week and we needed him back! It turns out EVERYONE could make it, so it was a great time!

We also tried some Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans that Katie and James E. picked up at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. I don't like Jelly Beans at all, so I kept track of what everyone was eating. It was hilarious.

Monday, we did grocery shopping as usual. Every week, our deli lady asks if she can give Adam a cookie and this was the first week I caved in. He loved it! I only let him eat half (and threw away the rest so that I wasn't tempted), but he could've eaten it all.

Oh! Adam is officially a toddler! Now that we're back home, he's attempting to walk everywhere, even if he falls most the time. Last night, he went the length of the hallway and I couldn't be more proud! He's like a kid now... not a baby...

Today is my dad's birthday! HAPPY BIRTHDAY! He really is the best dad and papa! I made a shirt for Adam for the occasion! (He's crying because I won't let him eat dog food.)
